JANE POWELL B.Ed (Hons): A.T.D. & F.R.S.A. - PROFILE
I have been drawing and painting all my life and have exhibited fairly extensively, whilst teaching art and art history at secondary schools both in Coventry and Warwickshire. My first exhibition was at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry in 1966 and this provided a successful beginning for future exhibitions at Leamington Spa Art Gallery, The Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry, the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham and many other venues. I had periods of producing canal paintings and drawings, interiors, local scenes and designing and producing a pub sign for the Rose and Crown at Ratley, Warwickshire. In l968 I joined the Coventry & Warwickshire Society of Artists and have exhibited with them through the years.
On leaving as Head of the Art Department at Kenilworth School, I set up the Jane Powell Art Studio, firstly in Balsall Common and then in Kenilworth at the Bank Gallery in the High Street. Working in conjunction with my cousin Marie, we expanded the business which gave us three small galleries in which artists could exhibit their work and from time to time, I had the opportunity to have shared exhibitions with other artists and my own one woman shows. The Studio exhibitions were many and varied with us regularly displaying group shows of two and three dimensional work, one man/woman displays and Open exhibitions. During these twelve years I also taught both adults and children on a weekly basis at the Studio. In 2002 I became Chairman of the CWSA.
Since retiring from the Kenilworth premises in 2008, I have been able to concentrate still further on my own painting. I love drawing and this is exemplified in my current work, together with colour, texture and form. Many of my paintings are autobiographical, thus how each of us sees ourselves, how we interact and how we work together. I enjoy building on the canvas, looking through, distorting and tearing the surface. This is life and how these positive and negative issues affect us all and make us who we are.
In 2009 I became President of the Coventry & Warwickshire Society of Artists. They have recently celebrated their Centenary with a successful “Century of Art “ Exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery in Coventry.
In 2013 I was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
